Open source to me is building things with a community. It’s life long friendships. It’s values include being genuine, having integrity, being transparent, being inclusive, being humble.

I’ve spent a lot of funemployment hanging out with a lot of these life long open source friends. It doesn’t matter where we work or who our employer is, we are still friends.

While some Linux foundation followers may agree with me and I may consider them in this category, quite a few don’t. And it’s indistinguishable from the genuine people since the others are so focused on playing the right politics.

So instead of giving the Linux foundation my support I chose to support the efforts and people that value what I value. This includes open collective, outreachy, google summer of code to name a few.

Linux foundation is necessary evil for these corporations to work together. I get that. But just be aware who actually has your back because while they may use the same terms, it’s built on bullshit. And that’s how I really feel.

And I think it’s actually quite dangerous to the younger folks joining these communities to not know the difference.

On this page is an interview I just did about founding the
@CentOSProject. At the bottom, there is another video clip that was included about how i created an inclusive community and why I did things differently. Would love to get your take on it@jessfraz! -
Greg, our slightly absent minded (yet totally awesome) project lead, forgot to include the link to the post that he is referring to. Near the bottom, is the link on creating an inclusive open source project, which he did for Singularity Containers too! https://blog.centos.org/2019/03/greg-kurtzer-centos-founder/ …

Holy words Jess! Totally agree. Young people should be aware of the real semantic behind words and common definitions in the context of politics and business...

I’ve felt this strongly too. The culture that surrounds open source is being used as a branding strategy by companies, with most of the software requiring infrastructure that only comes w/ privilege of resources. Contributors are being taken advantage of to further company goals.
