The thing that stands out most to me is that if you are contacting someone for comment it is considered very bad if you misrepresent why you are contacting them. “Oh hey I’d like to talk” will elicit a very different response from “I have dirt on you, care to chat?”

Yeah, Roiphe's vague email to Doneghan seems calculated to allow Roiphe to write "Doneghan did not respond to a request for comment" with minimal risk that she'd actually respond.
