One thing the reaction to this has taught me is that most people, including OP, don't know what "devil's advocate" means. It's not (typically) "Huh what if slavery is good?," but rather a way to make sure an argument is fully understood/reasoned out.https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/devils-advocate …

Let me be the devil’s advocate and suggest that you should not be hurled into the sun.

Love the assumption that anything but the authorized narrative is "evil." You would not believe some of the "what if's" and straw men I set up in class. I once went to a therapist who said I seem intent on committing suicide gradually. May be something to that.

i'm not seeing that assumption, and this doesn't seem bad without it

It doesn't seem like they're suggesting *not* to challenge arguments, just that one shouldn't feel obligated to challenge an argument as some sort of procedural thing. If a challenge is deserved... great! If not, no need for sophistry. How is this bad?

Is...is discouraging critical thinking now considered education? It's really hard to overstate how not good this is.

Translation: "We don't want them holding up a mirror to us and convincing us that most of our arguments are from a place of selfishness, greed and asshole behavior."
