I have had my run-ins with Rachel McKinnon, but setting that aside, it is really unacceptable that she continues to try to get people fired for their tweets. It's just not a good way to approach anything. Losing one's job can be absolutely devastating.pic.twitter.com/pQzi9OjHkA

This would be unacceptable either way, but McKinnon is tenured, which means she is one of the few people in a country with a terrible at-will employment system who basically CAN'T get fired. I've never had a job I couldn't get fired from but shouldn't it grant some perspective?

Why are so many organizations so open to firing someone because a person/people are upset on Twitter, though?

We skipped the step where gender identity and being trans was patiently and clearly explained to people who have never heard of such concepts. Instead, we jumped from liberal folks making jokes at the expense of trans folks to cancelling everyone who express just a bit of /1

questioning of the party line. That doesn't work. Conversations about gender identity were not happening outside of liberal college campuses and liberal corners of the internet until at most a few years ago. You don't convince people they're wrong by telling them they're /2

Yes well when you’re a racist, saying what you think might end up ousting you from your job. So yes, people will bash you when you take the white supremacist position that diversity is not a strength. Don’t be a racist. https://twitter.com/TuckerCarlson/status/1060707355590041601 …

I'll never understand how we could "Someone made me mad online once" become a valid reason to employ a scorched earth total life destruction tactic - and see people actively cheer for that.

They do it because they want to scare people into silence. People with similar opinions will see others have their livelihoods threatened and self-censor. Then, when the opposition is silenced, they can completely control the narrative.

If these types of folks keep trying to take away people's livelihood, and by extension destroy their family, eventually blowback will become real.
