I did see a couple people here and there throw out the P-word.
So:
-Physically perfect superspy who saves the world on his own and has sex with tons of gorgeous women straight male fans wish they could get with: *not* pandering
-All that, but also he's black: pandering

He did no favors to the Dark Tower films. I like him as an actor, but Black Washing a character to just make it fit the social norms of the day does more harm than good. I don't care so long as the movie is good - needs a good story!
-
It is already ridiculously difficult to reconcile the massive difference in technology from the original 60s films to the modern era to the point that it's easier to accept that "James Bond" refers to whomever possesses the 007 tag, so why should race play into it?
-
Agreed - if they make it the number and not about a man - it could work. That's why the story is so important, it'll make or break this change.
-
The actors chosen to be Bond have had almost nothing in common. They've looked different, had different heights, eye color, hair color, and even been from different countries. Why does one having a different skin color suddenly make it implausible?
-
Because it goes against 40 years of tradition. The fans have the right to complain about any changes made to a beloved franchise - no matter who is cast. To win them over again, the story has to be good and the rational behind the change has to make sense in the universe
-
A tradition that started in a pretty racist time. The only unifier in Bond's cultural identity is he's British. And Idris Elba is as British as they come. It's literally just skin color.
-
And yet no one is upset that he isn't aging. The original Bond would be 98 by now.
-
Not if he’s a Time Lord.

Do you remember the shit-fit people had when Daniel Craig was chosen as Bond?
-
[I take a deep puff from my pipe] I'm really above all that -- I prefer literature [pronounced with three distinct syllables]
-
haha. sure, sure. The more Idris Elba I can absorb through my eyeballs, the better
-
This is the only correct opinion to have.
-
I would make a much better bond than idris elba
-
That we will never know.

Keep a lookout for the first brown bond in the 2030s ..........
-
Can we skip the brown Bond (Jamesh Bond) please? I want a high tech katana-wielding japanese Bond (Jin Bond). They've been giving hints of that for decades now.pic.twitter.com/OWrEzRQhzh

He’ll have trouble driving the Astin Martin though our racist police will keep pulling him over
-
One small problem with that. An Astin Martin isn't a thing. Aston Martin however is a gorgeous car.
-
It's a cross between an Austin Metro and an Aston Martin
