a couple weeks ago i was interviewed at @NIDevConf about what it’s like to be an artist in video games !
one of the questions was about the best piece of art advice i had, and i’d just like to elaborate on my answer a little!pic.twitter.com/TOV3TirmPx
in the video i say the best thing i’ve learned is to consider audience when you’re designing, as the purpose of the art direction is to work alongside story and gameplay to make the player feel certain ways and i do think this applies in a professional context!

but if you’re young, aspiring, or doing personal work, i actually think it’s the opposite if you’re drawing just for you, you should draw what you want! follow your heart, i mean it!

when you draw what you love, youll enjoy the process more and improve more easily, and your style will naturally have its own unique flavour, honed through your personality and taste

trust me i’m an expert in having the same hyperfixation for decadeshttps://twitter.com/jessanight/status/1206261386373931008?s=20 …

when it comes to drawing for a living you have to learn how to strike the balance between your own feelings and aesthetic instincts, and what the project and audience needs being able to draw for yourself helps this!

when you love the process, and your personal work has built those muscles of self expression, it’s much easier to deconstruct all that stuff and funnel it into communication for an audience! and also drawing things just for u will keep u sane

i’ll close out w a drunk tweet i made at the end of last year about this exact thing but more concisehttps://twitter.com/jessanight/status/1212135219349872641?s=20 …
