    Final analysis: on the client's machine, using the downloaded mysql app worked when brew install mysql didn't. Well.

    Update: I think it was in fact anaconda, because I just tried again on my own machine (both OSX) and all I had to do was brew install openssl and export the LDFLAGS and CPPFLAGS and it installed fine.

    It could not find libssl despite it being on the machine. I tried various options of linking but nothing worked.

    W. T. H. I don't often use MySQL anymore, but a client needed it. Apparently python 3 and mysqlclient is a giant mess (maybe due to anaconda?). Nothing I tried worked. In the end, we went with mysql-connector-python, which worked perfectly.

    You know what millenials should kill next? Lawns. Lawns suck. In high school, I convinced my family to let me tear ours up and replace it with wildflowers. Now it requires minimal maintenance AND attracts tons of birds and native pollinators
