Home for the next two weeks. To my friends back in the northeast, it's 72°F right now 😏🏝 I mean... we'll still be in a lab all day, but these 10 minutes outside are REALLY nice.

One of the earliest lessons my dad taught me. "Saying 'I could've won if I'd tried harder' doesn't make failing feel better. Even if you DO win, it won't mean much if you half-assed it. So go out there & leave it all on the floor."

I'm not saying I disagree, I'm just saying if my right-hand jar is full, my left hand jar is OVERFLOWING.

Told my writing buddy that I was looking at a particular (350pg) dissertation & she immediately said "Oh, honey, no! Not that one." then suggested three other (150pg) theses and that's the kind of peer MH support I aspire to.

Lots of discussion out there about this advice, generally how problematic it is, but one thing I haven’t seen is a discussion of what drives such advice. So, let’s talk about scarcity culture.

I came out of a toxic industry job feeling totally worthless as a scientist. Like healing from an injury it takes time and support. Find ways to stretch your creativity and build back your confidence. Be kind to yourself and know that you can overcome this and be stronger for it.

"Results were robust to a range of sensitivity analyses with no evidence of moderation by sex, socioeconomic status, or social factors." I still don't really buy it; SES is v hard to quantify. But that headline 🙄 I'd be so embarrassed if my work were represented that way.

    3) An explicit code of conduct statement that prohibits harassment, outlines explicit consequences for violating said code of conduct, & gives attendees multiple reporting mechanisms. As a female trainee, this makes a HUGE difference. 4/4 So, thanks !

    2) Clear expectations & ongoing communication of what can and can’t be shared/tweeted about. Along with active encouragement of the sharing of unpublished data, this creates an innovative environment that encourages collaboration. 3/4

    1) Active facilitation of faculty-trainee interactions: - events, such as speaker-trainee small group lunches - policies, such as "the first question after a talk must come from a trainee" 2/4

So, the science at is phenomenal/inspiring. The speaker list is distinguished, & the talks have been fascinating. But the really distinctive thing about this conference is the environment that & have created. A few factors: 1/4

When that many of your (smart, hard-working, hand-selected) trainees are experiencing mental health difficulties, maybe - and stop me if this sounds crazy - maybe it isn't the trainees. Maybe it's, ya know, the environment they're in.

“Bullying, harassment, abuse and other mistreatments that create toxic research groups are too common across academia.” Anyone who doesn’t take grad students seriously when they talk about abusive mentors needs to read this article.
