You don't want to make eye contact with "crazies" for fear of triggering an attack yet looking away makes you vulnerable. Some people incorrectly assume they'll leave you alone if you don't bother them. Reality: they can snap and without telegraphing anything, attack unprovoked.

You would not take your eyes off of a tiger wandering the streets. Put your own safety above whatever you've been taught about not staring / manners. Better to be prepared for an attack. If anything, it'll be humanizing to look at them as they are usually made to feel invisible.

Truth is after each of these horrible events people still vote for the same politicians that are weak on crime, release in hours with no bail, refuse to prosecute, and embolden these attacks. You cannot help someone (a city) that isn’t isn’t willing to help themselves.
