Whenever I read research saying women don’t negotiate salaries because they lack confidence, I remember I’ve never heard a man say their offer was rescinded for trying to negotiate a higher salary but have seen lots of women report that experience.

I got an offer, asked for 8k more (why? Because why not? Negotiating comp is perfectly normal) and they rescinded my offer. Lmao WHAT?

I have seen it happen to men. Scenario: high offer is made to top choice, obscene counter is made. Deal seems unlikely so before reverting to #1, offer goes out to strong #2. #2 accepts, reply goes to #1 informing of no re-counter and origninal offer off the table, role filled.

I'm sure it happens to men. But one of the points of this discussion is that not only will women often not even ASK for one, it certainly wouldn't be an obscene increase on an already high offer. The fact men think they can even do this is actually the point here.

I don’t have the data to say whether, when negotiating salaries, men or women make more extreme demands. Could be women land more jobs vs men because hiring managers are put off by men over negotiating. Anecdotally, men appear to be more risk-taking vs women in life, in general.
