DYK that the IRS can block your passport renewal if they think you owe taxes or penalties because they’re behind on updating their records? I found out after flying 6 hours to my emergency renewal appointment only to get a rejection letter handed to me instead of my new passport.

In 2021 the IRS received 282M phone calls. Customer service representatives only answered 32M (11%.) IRS didn't complete processing all 2019 returns until June 2021. IRS aims to respond to taxpayer correspondence in 45 days. As of Jan 1 their turnaround time is nearly 1 year.

Exactly. I thought that there’s no way this is legal. Apparently, the law changed in 2015. Btw, the amount they thought I owed was like < 1% of my tax bill. Really F’d up that you are literally held hostage for a ransom payment until you can pay it or prove you don’t owe it.

Yeah, this was the first time I really felt like I should have a second citizenship/passport. It’s like the first time my bank account got frozen (due to bank error) and I had no way to buy food/gas. Went straight to set up additional accounts with other banks. Was a wake-up call
