DYK that the IRS can block your passport renewal if they think you owe taxes or penalties because they’re behind on updating their records? I found out after flying 6 hours to my emergency renewal appointment only to get a rejection letter handed to me instead of my new passport.

In 2021 the IRS received 282M phone calls. Customer service representatives only answered 32M (11%.) IRS didn't complete processing all 2019 returns until June 2021. IRS aims to respond to taxpayer correspondence in 45 days. As of Jan 1 their turnaround time is nearly 1 year.

They admitted their mistake but by the time they were able to clear the holds with State Dept and mail my passport to me, I’d missed my window for the trip. Why couldn’t they have informed me of the issue at the time they booked the appointment? A few thousand $ and days wasted.

Exactly. I thought that there’s no way this is legal. Apparently, the law changed in 2015. Btw, the amount they thought I owed was like < 1% of my tax bill. Really F’d up that you are literally held hostage for a ransom payment until you can pay it or prove you don’t owe it.
