Changing Section 230 will do more harm than good and silence marginalized voices. Self-regulation is never going to work. Here are some things that will actually help address the harm of Facebook & companies like it: a THREAD.
1. Finally pass a real Federal data privacy law.
Congress has been dragging its feet on this for years but there's actually a lot of bipartisan agreement. They should pass a privacy law strong enough that it makes surveillance-driven algorithmic recommendation systems unworkable
2. Pass new antitrust laws and enforce existing ones.
While surveillance practices are at the root of most Big Tech company's monopoly power, we can also meet it head on with thoughtful legislation & enforcement that takes aim directly at anticompetitive business practices.
This a hairy one. Facebook/Instagram, don’t have monopoly power but people talk about it like they do. For luxury goods & entertainment, which is what these platforms are, it’s easy to opt out, and there are many competing alternatives for wasting time.
