When I put some nuts out for the squirrel, what does he think? Hope he doesn't think of himself as a criminal because I entrapped him with an irresistible walnut.

Not sure.. he jumps in to the bushes & trees nearby when he sees me come out. He did come back to get the nuts shortly after I went back inside though so he probably was watching.

You should start conditioning him to your presence, start staying outside next to nuts longer each time. Maybe eventually the guy will befriend you and start knocking on the door for nuts instead of waiting for you.

I'm worried about doing that because I've heard of them becoming aggressive with humans once they lose fear and see humans as a food source.
