Can someone ELI5 why pensions exist for jobs that aren't expected to beat your body in to disability through the course of service? I get it for super physically demanding stuff where injuries are high, like firefighting and infantry but why for postal workers & teachers?

There's good deals and then there's the unconscionable, abusive deal "negotiated" with a toddler who was too naive to understand what he was consenting to. I think it's pretty apparent now which this is so why are we going on with it?

No, I'm saying that the government rep is the weaker party. These deals were probably negotiated by very savvy, profit-driven union execs. On the other side of the table is some rando from the government with no biz experience, no budget, spending someone else's money.
