Can someone ELI5 why pensions exist for jobs that aren't expected to beat your body in to disability through the course of service? I get it for super physically demanding stuff where injuries are high, like firefighting and infantry but why for postal workers & teachers?

I don't think pensions are designed to be based on your ability to work after you stop working at your job, they're designed to give people a steady income after they retire from their job.

The assumption being that the job where they're earning their pension from, will probably be their last job before they retire.

I suspect it's the same reason why many people seem to be excited to get a tax refund at the end of the year.
Those people don't want to be bothered with managing their own money. They don't want to see it. They just want it taken care of automatically.

Why not pay them market rate and let them sort out their own retirement like everyone else?

There's good deals and then there's the unconscionable, abusive deal "negotiated" with a toddler who was too naive to understand what he was consenting to.
I think it's pretty apparent now which this is so why are we going on with it?
