USDC blacklisting an address happened back in mid June, and only now hitting news cycles. Is *anyone* watching what happens on-chain? Reminds me of when ETC was 51% attacked and *only Coinbase* noticed, because we were actually watching. We need more watchers.

What is the mechanism to “watch” for a 51% attack? A massive reorg out of nowhere? This concept I haven’t considered much but is clearly important.

Yes, essentially watch for significant re-orgs. Coinbase has built some deep tooling to be able to detect and alert on deep re-orgs (and better protect our customer's funds!). It was surprising to me when ETC was attacked and nobody else knew about it for >24 hours.
