This is why I don't think journalists should hold any crypto. If you hold one, you can be seen to have a bias against all others. At Decrypt we have a policy of disclosures but I personally don't hold more than $50 of any coin for this reason.

Cryptobriefing is a dumpster fire of a publication. Thanks for letting a journalist who holds both bitcoin and ethereum tell us how we are going to fail. twitter.com/OctoberBlack1/…

Where do you draw the line though? Don’t think anybody would fault you for getting long BTC or ETH at this point. You have to be able to invest somewhere.. stocks, real estate, etc. Owning a house doesn’t mean you’re biased against DOGE.

The spirit of the editor's code is that you don't write about something that you are invested in. It refers to stocks but I believe it applies to crypto too. In this case, I think owning stocks or real estate wouldn't be a conflict because we rarely cover them.

It should prevent you from holding gold or cash as well, as those are directly replaced by crypto. Sitting out the market is still taking a position — in whatever you’re holding while you’re sitting out.

You could argue that this policy actually makes you kinda bearish on crypto (which would negate the actual policy goal)

I get there's an argument there but I think the other side outweighs it. If you own crypto and write positive articles about certain coins, you could make some money. But you won't make lots of money by owning fiat and writing negative articles about crypto.

You won't. And I respect your view of the argument much more than the opposite. I just think it's almost a bit much...for your own sake. Somebody who analyses crypto should (hopefully) understand its potential and become very excited about it. Not being able to invest would suck.

That kind of frustration would almost inevitably lead to sour grapes, rationalizing against the success of crypto
