Degrees matter more to some than others. Governments seem to care a lot about them. They show that you passed some bar somewhere, that you might have a valuable network. It's like doing 4 years at Google. IMO hiring will move more to skill tests and certificate value will wane.

I took an extra year to graduate so I could do a year co-op. that was a great decision because it that single year taught me more than any CS class did in undergrad. Like, hey, you're gonna be spending a shit ton of time reading other people's broken code.

While I agree all higher education needs fixing, as mentioned there's a bar that's set by certifying institutions that goes beyond just skill set. Major korean corporations actually do extensive personality and psychological testing. Not sure if I agree with it.

Re: resume standing out — most applicants are super lazy so it’s not usually that hard. Even a cover letter that isn’t obviously canned can be enough. Say something insightful that shows you put some thought in to why this is a good fit, that you’re familiar with the business.

I agree, the benefits of a degree is ability to commit and complete a task. Besides that I've found it has little value in the workforce compared with experience and workplace skills. I want to see a complete restructure of many educational programs to align these two goals
