Why don't we pay politicians more? Governor of California makes $173k/yr to lead a team of 800k (like Amazon), which generates revenue of $140b/yr (like Google). If we want top talent, shouldn't the CEO of CA get paid something comparable to the CEOs of these businesses?

But let's say CA's CEO role paid $100k base + 0.1% of gross revenue, wouldn't that be enough to entice some amazing business operators to enter the race?

Maybe because the voters don't see themselves as shareholders. There are no KPIs to track, no dividend payments. Rising home/land values might even be seen as a negative by many voters. What would actually cause voters to vote in the best operator vs most charismatic demagogue?
