Part of the issue is that mainstream media is constantly looking for some sensational "gotcha" angle, slight misstatement to repeat out of context, etc. It's high risk, low reward relative to publishing your own content or doing a live podcast/video which can't be distorted.

You say "can't be distorted", I say "can't be challenged" - I work as a PR Advisor, and I work plently with owned channels. If you're terrified of the big, bad media, it's probably because you're doing something that looks bad. That should be cause for reflection, not smugness.
