Well, let's say I could hire your guy for $100k/yr or I could look a little harder and hire someone just as good who isn't yet in crypto for $100k/yr. To some extent we are all on the same mission so do I start musical chairs with the current talent pool or expand the pool?
It’s fine to hire from within the same industry; super common and “poaching” is just part of the game. Just be open to folks outside the space too. They may be precoiners, but sometimes they can bring needed skills not found in the current pool of “insiders”.
Some might say that crypto is a special case, that we all need to work together to get crypto to escape velocity, and then we can worry about splitting up the pie.
Poaching could be part of the game but are there any risks, like pissing off someone who can poach back harder?
Outside=harder to train, can be a culture shock, can be detrimental esp. if they don't "buy in" to crypto or your product.
IF they fit, it can be great. It's good to remember how weird crypto is. It's good to remember that 100% of crypto ppl know Kraken but only 1% of all ppl.
If they have buy-in though, but come from unrelated tech, then all you’re left w/ is the learning curve.
When I started dev’ing (feels like ages ago) the expectation was 6mo to fully learn the stack and product for an engineer.
I wonder if that’s still reasonable for outsiders?

When they come applying for the job, no question. Maybe it's like dating -- how am I going to know that your girlfriend wouldn't actually prefer to be my girlfriend unless I talked to her about it? Or, should I maybe just focus on single ladies?
