Was talking to some youngsters about startup life. We had very different views on one topic: where is the line between a boss being a “bully” and a boss being appropriately demanding. Are the kids getting soft or do people feel trapped in jobs where they’re getting low marks?

Either this person was a bad boss or because they needed his/her capacity at that time. Didn't have sufficient bandwidth to go find a new person. But prolonged negative feedback without improvement does mean the manager is likely making a mistake somewhere.

Depends on the delivery of "negative feedback". Calm and concerned = normal. Hostile and screaming = Bully. I've been in the receiving end of repeat negative feedback, for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why I was being singled out when no one else was... /1

I finally asked. "Because you're the only one I have any hope will improve. The rest are lost causes and idiots." It was still unpleasant, because the feedback was always about stuff I had no chance, whatsoever, of getting "right" (his way) on the first try...
