The drop in labor participation rate of young men is a result of: (i) decrease in cost of media (ii) increases in both availability & (iii) quality of media, & (iv) a decrease in marginal signalling utility of (conspicuous) consumption goods for all but the highest earners.

Great insights there. Still, my question is why aren't more young people motivated to fill their time with meaningful work, passion projects, volunteering, etc. There's a huge social component to today's games -- they're hangouts for friends. Maybe we need to better gamify RL.

Traditions/equilibriums developed over millenia have helped society members transition through stages of development but current elite competition is based on destroying tradition. The replacement cost is much higher than anticipated.

John Locke and Thomas Hobbes are the be all end all of political theory, we can “logic” our way into a civilization, family and community bonds can be replaced with medication and yoga class

This impacts young people because they're a generation removed from strong communities and their teachers only offer them structurelessness.
e.g. A past teen could learn group dynamics through working on the farm and through instrumental convergence learn how to get shit done
