I am excited to see that Foreign Affairs () did a capsule review of my book. If you'd like to purchase the book, you can get 30% off by going to the website and using the code 09FLYER (outside of the US, use CS09FLYER).

Wherein Minxin Pei argues that a pathological tendency toward secrecy within China’s leadership hobbles the authorities’ capacity to respond quickly to epidemics. This is not good news, as bird flu has recently been discovered in Hunan.

Some people have asked if I believe the official figures. The answer is, from where I am in quasi-quarantine back in Beijing, I have no way of saying if they’re accurate or not. Even if you had free range to travel around it’d be difficult to verify.

Like with everything else, Hong Kong has been reactive, not proactive.

Okay, so just to do some elementary school math. There are 7 million people in Hong Kong. 8 million masks arriving may helpful... but given the fact that millions of people want them they'll be gone in less than a day.

Too little, too late? This points to fears that the Lam regime is not taking sufficient proactive measures to deal with the coronavirus. What makes this an issue is that nurses and doctors here may go on strike if the border isn't closed. via

What a crazy academic year it has been in HK. First, the protests and pitched battle against riot police led CUHK to end its first semester almost a month early; now the Wuhan coronavirus led CUHK to cancel classes until Feb. 17.
