I'm that guy who laughs nonstop at his own terrible jokes.

I'm sorry but this was comedy gold and still cracks me up. CoYoneda FreeT 😂 (thanks to my wife for trusting me that this is funny rather than immediately divorcing me as any rational person would)

Inspired because I noticed The Mask of Zorro is on Netflix and it's one of my favorite movies of all time. I don't care what the critics said, it's fucking excellent and you should watch it right now.

Was going to tweet my amazing insight that Zorro is the original Batman, but a precursory Google search reveals this is common knowledge dating back to the 1940s. I'm tweeting anyway because we should also tweet things that don't make us look smart.

To clear up some recursion scheme terminology: Hylomorphism: an arrow in the category of wooden carvings. Mylomorphism: an arrow in the category of molars (e.g. maxillofacial surgeons). Bananafanafofylomorphism: an arrow in the category of cooties and poopy-heads.

FWIW, it parses to: This.entire(tweet).is(valid).Scala(source(it.will(actually).parse(as).a(program), which.will(compile).as(long).as(the).correct(definitions).are(provided)).Seriously.!(challenge.-(provide).the(definitions))

This entire tweet is valid Scala source (it will actually parse as a program, which will compile as long as the correct definitions are provided). Seriously! (challenge - provide the definitions)

To clear up some confusion about FreeT - a FreeT is a shirt that a company gives away for marketing purposes. For example, you're not that interested in a vendor but you visit their booth anyway CoYoneda FreeT.

(Ron Perlman voice) Star wars. Star wars never changes. It was pretty good though.

(which is a difficult balancing act, because slides cannot capture every detail and nuance of what you're saying – otherwise you've written an article, not a talk)

A takeaway for me is to realize that however many people actually watch your talk, that number may be dwarfed by the number of people who skim through your slides. It's a good idea to consider what the slides appear to say when there's no context around them. (4/4)

But that's just one anecdote, and there are many use cases where it makes perfect sense to use an abstract effect type. Hopefully it was clearer in the context of the talk that we were just providing a counter-example to shine light on the trade-offs. (3/4)

This slide was discussing the tradeoffs of abstract/concrete effect types, which exist in both directions. It was an anecdote on how we initially went abstract for (arguably) the wrong reason – to make it "easier to switch" – and how *in this case* it didn't buy us anything.(2/4)

I've noticed a slide from our talk (the one titled "Don't F[_] around") making the rounds and I want to clarify something: out of context, this slide appears to be asserting that you should never abstract over effect types. This was *not* the intent. (1/4)

Note that this is not in response to a difficult photographer, it's the idea of hiring a photographer under the default legal situation that boils my blood

Please, if you're hiring a photographer, refuse to do business unless they agree to assign you the copyright.

If the original fee is not enough for you then raise it and give me the rights to the images of my family. How is this the law? It makes no goddamn sense.

If I hire you to take photos, isn't that work for hire? If not, what is? Why should you get a legal strangle hold on the photos and be able to extort additional money every time I want to use or print it? It's fucking ludicrous.
