I just found this very concerning podcast with epidemiologist Ian Lipkin, former WHO adviser on SARS, who said that he chose *not* to release information that masks were strongly protective against SARS, in order to protect supply. http://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-special-lipkin/ …pic.twitter.com/mw8O38xq34

This appears to be the study in question, which shows a 70% reduction in transmission when consistently using a mask. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3322931/ …

Hopefully it's obvious that it's a bad idea to hide the effectiveness of something that can dramatically slow a pandemic. But if not, there was a great article from @zeynep at around the time this podcast was released.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/17/opinion/coronavirus-face-masks.html …

This has been the main argument offered by the @WelshGovernment @CMOWales & @vaughangething as to why they won't advise or mandate the use of masks for public settings like shops. It's a false argument & the error will be measured in lives, chronic ill health and a ruined economy

SARS did not have asymptomatic transmission. Main need for masks was in health care settings. Once proper procedures with PPE were in place, SARS was over. Very different from COVID-19, which is why IL talks about it.

So your interpretation of this is that he's drawing a distinction with SARS, rather than talking about response to COVID-19? If so, why is he talking about this only going to a memoir, when there's already a 2014 paper about it? I may well be misinterpreting this - I'm confused

I can't put my hand on the video but there was footage of a senior @who official interviewed on asian tv admitting very much the same thing. That they had done the research after SARS and that of course masks work. If anyone has the link?

I would say we all pretty much figured this was the case a long time ago. If leaders would of just admitted this then people would be more trusting from the health officials .. so many are skeptical and with good reason. calling @CPHO_Canada
