David Edelsohn, Carlos O'Donnell, Nick Clifton, Ramana Radhakrishnan, Jeff Law, Jason Merrill, Joseph Myers, Toon Moene and Jim Wilson lead the GCC steering committee Q&A at @gnutools Cauldron. Discussion covered git surprisingly quickly. The community seem happy with the git mirror, the drive to have git as the primary technology seems to have evaporated.

Next up a discussion of using Python in GCC. Not sure there was a resolution, but not something happening yet.

Bigger subject next. What worries the committee. Jeff Law has a BoF later looking at processes. What do we do to engage the next generation? How do we make it easier to get started with GCC?

Now considering the key future technical challenges. Diagnostics; making optimizations like PGO and LTO easier to use; parallel linking; loader speed. #GNUCauldron.

Question about GPUs and AI. Something of a negative frustration about the closed ecosystems of manufacturers. #GNUCauldron.

Now a discussion about how to ensure the GNU tool chain is secure. Particularly glibc. Generated code breaks proprietary static scanners. Need patches to make the code more scanner friendly. Annotations possibly for proprietary tools?

Following up on this, can GCC become the static analyzer, removing the need for commercial third party tools. Practical as well as philosophical advantages for those without access to commercial tools. #GNUCauldron.

Back to AI, both support for new types of processor and use within the compiler. Should GCC even be in this space, or should it focus on excellence in C/C++/Fortran? Or should it be a general FOSS enabler, even if not the best? #GNUCauldron.

New subject. What other communities should we be reaching out to? Python suggested first by two committee members. Linux Foundation. Linux kernel project, with Linux Plumbers as a key event. Connected to priorities of sponsors of GCC Fund. #GNUCauldron.

Question about compiler performance. GCC not very good these days. Also question of size - can't build everything on 32-bit. Important to distinguish between target (e.g. IoT) and host. What about distros on 32-bit - hard to cross-compile. #GNUCauldron.
