Newsmax also gained viewers after the 2020 election, though by February 2021 it had leveled out again. This time, "They're going stick," Newsmax chief Chris Ruddy told me. "We’re much better positioned. We’re a much more mature as a news organization.”

While Fox has lost viewers at 8 p.m. and in primetime overall, Newsmax has surged. Eric Bolling's show averaged 202k viewers in the four weeks before Tucker's firing and 489k in the four weeks after. The question I asked: Can Newsmax maintain the surge?

After Fox News and Newsmax ran dozens of on-air segments raging about a fake story about homeless vets being displaced by "illegals," Laura Ingraham has "no clue why anyone would make up such a thing."

Ingraham: A little update on a story we brought you this week about homeless vets being displaced from hotels so illegals can move in, turns out the group behind the claim made it up. We have no clue why anyone would do such a thing

There's no mention of the word "primetime," though Fox News says that Laura Ingraham will continue being a host for Fox News — amid speculation based on a Drudge Report item suggesting that two other Fox hosts would be moving into the 8-11 p.m. primetime block

Fox News statement: “Reports based on various tweets by left wing activists are wildly inaccurate – Laura Ingraham, the top-rated woman in cable news, is now and will continue to be a prominent host and integral part of the Fox News lineup."

To be clear: If Watters and Gutfeld “get primetime,” and Hannity is at 8 pm, then it would mean that Laura Ingraham isn’t in the block traditionally considered primetime. Though she could be at 7 pm, which Fox has also marketed as primetime. This all still speculative for now tho

The Drudge Report is reporting that Fox News is shaking up their primetime schedule, putting Hannity at 8 and moving Watters and Gutfeld. But, a Fox spokesperson says. “No decision has been made on a new primetime line-up and there are multiple scenarios under consideration.”

Murdoch was asked what Fox Corp leadership could do differently going forward to avoid lawsuits. Murdoch: "The question is: How do we not get sued? It's a great question. We could be CNN, right?" Murdoch says if CNN Trump town hall was newsworthy, so were Trump claims in 2020.

The problem with this argument is that you would have needed to tell the anchors what to say/focus on, rather than letting people like Jake Tapper give their honest analysis, like he did

CNN chief executive Chris Licht told staffers this morning that "America was served very well by what we did last night." It's not the consensus inside the network, though staffers acknowledge the difficult position Kaitlan Collins was put in.

Covering Trump is "tricky and messy," Licht says, and it will "continue to be messy and tricky, but it's our job." He confidently says "America was served very well by what we did last night." Many CNN employees strongly disagree.

Licht also defended the news value of the town hall and said it generated a lot of headlines because of Trump's comments, mentioning the exchange he had with Collins where he wouldn't say he wanted Ukraine to win.

There will be questions about the format of this event. While presidential town halls are by nature live, a taped event would have allowed for editing. Some at CNN think that Collins did as well as could be done — but in a "flawed" format.
