My Wacom drawing tablet asked me to accept a privacy policy. Why does a device that is essentially a mouse need a privacy policy? I wondered. The answer is “so that they can track the name and time of every application that you open.”

Blech. Struggling with a real tricky bug. First bug I've spent more than two days on in a long time.

What's easier than coding, after all? Spreadsheets 😛

I see a hilarious turn of events where, in order to achieve this, it boils down to computer scientists improving Excel.

Maybe I'm turning into one of those old mathematicians who were just like, screw it let's sum all the positive integers.

To quote Hamming: "The great scientists often make this error. They fail to continue to plant the little acorns from which the mighty oak trees grow. They try to get the big thing right off."

And more importantly, one needs a desire and encouragement to improve the state of the art in their work. Reflection, big-picture synthesis, deliberate improvement.

These days I often think that engineers *need* to struggle on concrete problems, and get close to the metal in some sense, to develop discipline and understand the role of tools and architecture. But of course, the pain needs to be in a controlled, limited-impact environment.

I once heard (but can't remember the source) that if you or your team has bad discipline, then tools and buzzwords won't save you.

Many rely on tools for that (language restrictions, architectural buzzwords, etc.), while often the underlying principles are subverted, knowledge transfer is skipped, and the quality quickly degrades as a result.

The whole point of software is to be flexible, but we also can't make things that last without prohibiting certain adulterations and modifications to existing systems.

I'm also fairly certain that the reason "all software is shit" is that most are making it up as they go along. Folks either don't spend enough time up front to make things concrete, or they don't stick to principles, or they don't know what they want to do.

In software, I find that once you have a concrete understanding of what you want to do, and strong principles around its purpose, doing it well and designing for extensibility is easy.

A non engineer just asked me for help with something and said the priceless line: "Is that something I can do from the browser or do I need to use the black screen?" They meant the terminal :)

Nicely formatted and colored spreadsheets bother me because it feels like compensation for lack of meaning and authority of the content.

After tweeting this I read about Wittgenstein some more. Apparently he was enamored by mathematical logic then turned his back on it more or less.

The limits of my language are the limits of my hello world. Wittgenstein got really frustrated with programing back then.
