I’m currently getting infection reports from organizations all over — this thing is spreading crazy fast and indiscriminately it seems.

All hands on deck InfoSec, we’re in for a LONG weekend… and the week to follow.

What if my business has zero Windows machines (300ppl company)?
-
It looks like the malware only infects Windows machines vulnerable to EternalBlue.
-
Win10 isn't vulnerable IIRC, right?
-
I’m not 100% sure.

Can someone explain to me why a heart surgeon can't perform surgery because the computers are down?
-
Is this some inability to access records/images that need to be used during surgery or something?
-
I assume that there's no PC that needs to be operational *during* the surgery, that would be connected to the internet, right?
-
Drs need access to patient records to research, plan, order medications, schedule and also update. All the day-to-day operational stuff.
-
technically care can still be given, but slower using a paper backup system, which causes cancellation for other patients.
-
Okay - so heart surgeons are still doing heart surgery today, but due to other logistics they can't do as many.
-
Mostly — yes.

Thanks.

I just wonder how many people may die because of this?
-
No idea. I really, really hope not. But if it’s not this one, it’s gonna happen eventually. :(

Medical software is such a garbage-fire. I *really* hope this makes them *slightly* more likely to upgrade software?
-
It's not the medical software which makes it vulnerable, not directly at least. Updates and all the testing that that requires cost lots.
-
It's not *just* the medical software, no. There seems to be a pervasive industry allergy to best practices all around. In my (limited) exp.
-
I imagine budgets come into the equation.
-
I think it's mostly-cultural, personally. That is, if you doubled the money in medical software I don't think it would get more secure

Oh wait, you're not talking about the UK
#NHS... -
Right, North America mostly. Still, I imagine a lot of the same players are involved...?
