I wrote and extensive piece on the last Japanese boarding house in LA, the efforts to preserve it, and the fight for the current elderly tenants who are dealing with the effects of gentrification. This story was a FEAT & took months & months of reporting.

WIFI OUT / DEMONS IN

“This is just the best age group to examine human behavior,” said #BodiesBodiesBodies director Halina Reijn. “When the power goes out and the Wi-Fi goes out, they change. The animal comes out. It’s like the Wi-Fi is our oxygen. Wi-Fi out, demons in.” latimes.com/entertainment-

Having interviewed people for decades, this is the one thing I can say with great conviction, we don’t know really what people are going through. There is so much, too much, quiet suffering. Even here, especially here, please be gentle as you are able.

Not sure if anyone noticed this. In #Nope the design of Ricky’s aliens share an eerie similarity to the Panavision cameras that were used on the set of Gordy’s Home. He would have been looking at these cameras for years as a child. Perhaps another way the trauma manifested itself

I loved Nope (2022) and thought it was Peele’s most personal film and felt like him wrestling with the burden of becoming an Event Filmmaker. A film about the ethics of capturing the horrific, of exploiting one’s trauma for spectacle. A devil’s deal with a literal Monkey’s Paw.
