Fellow lovers of #rstats RMarkdown, I'm curious about how people handle working with sensitive data (ie PHI) from data warehouses. Do you do it locally in RStudio, accepting potential risk of having PHI on hard drives? A paid cloud solution?

New blog post! If the phrase “list comprehension” makes you feel panic, or even just befuddlement, I’ve written a friendly introduction to list and dict comprehensions that can help. (It’s not just you, the concept is confusing at the beginning!) medium.com/@s.kirmer/list

I came home to Nashville this summer- but haven’t seen a show, lingered over dinner inside my favorite spots, sat in friends’ living rooms. Even my walk on that BNA carpet when I landed was eerily quiet. It’s hard to grieve this year while separate. Thanks for this, .

This and no mask mandate. We’re the worst spot in the country for Covid right now by far, our health care system is about to break, people are dying *needlessly*, and is asking “pretty please.”

IS A (BIO)STAT PHD RIGHT FOR ME?
Prospective students ask me this several times a year. It’s a tough one. I am super enthusiastic about stat and data science careers. It’s an interesting job with lots of variety and a strong job market. But a phd isn’t right for everyone. 1/

(It is also very strange to move during a pandemic, particularly from a place where cases have 📉 to one where cases are 📈. Processing those feelings is tough, especially when you want nothing more than to hug your people who are now so close but yet so far. I miss hugs.)

Boston was good for me in a lot of ways; I'm really grateful to have had that experience. I needed a jolt of something new, and, well, the last 1.5 years sure provided :) One day when we hop on planes again I'll be excited to visit the people and places I'll miss there.

Since it feels strange not to say so: I moved back to Nashville! 🙌 (Yes, still at Devoted!)
I'm thrilled to be back in the city that's home, & closer to so many of my people; I'm in a new-to-me neighborhood & it feels right to have a fresh start too.

We gotta talk about burn out. You aren’t conditioned to be thinking about race this much because of your privilege. We need you to do all you’re doing today, tomorrow, and until the end of time.
Let’s talk about ways to focus on current & systemic change.

Her friends and family remember her as a caring person, someone who loved her job in health care, playing cards with her aunts, falling asleep watching movies with friends.

If you, like the NYT now realize what rockstars epidemiologists are, please remember most of what we know about #COVID19 was uncovered by epidemiologists working overtime, mostly unpaid. Consider asking your government to build better outbreak response funding plans.
