We may not always show up but the more we know about the research you're doing and sharing that's policy-relevant, the more likely we are to think of that work when the time is right.

...policy, law, business, medicine, psych, econ, polisci, many many others. Put government officials on your regular invite lists. Think municipal, county, and state agency employees, elected officials, school district leaders, many others.

Another tip in the helping-research-to-inform-policy department: invite government to you constantly. "To" you meaning literally to be in your space. If you're at an institution of higher ed (college/university, community college, etc.) or another type of research org...

...something you read about policymakers' priorities? Regardless of where you are in the research process, "sharing" it as an fyi with a link (happens often) isn't enough. Provide the context and explicitly state connections to policy.

Most of the time, for that research to have any chance of getting attention from the policy realm, you must share WHY you think it would be of interest. Is it related to pending or passed legislation, to a funding request, to...

Tip #3 for researchers who want to increase the potential for their work to have an impact on policy: when you share your research with people in policy roles, it's not enough to say, "I'm sharing this [article, findings, etc.] because I think it will interest you." Not helpful!

PS - if you teach a policy (or policy-related) class, encourage your students to sign up for press releases, too. Can be eye-opening and highly informative.

I constantly hear researchers ask how they can get more in the loop on state policy issues and decisions. Subscribing to agency press releases is one easy step. Two of many examples from NC: and

Let's assume that you know which government agencies are most relevant to your research. Do you subscribe to those agencies' press releases?

Another tip for researchers who want to have an impact on policy. This one doesn't even require human interaction!

Lynch asked: "How will you use your time?" and so importantly stressed the need for talking with people who are different from "us" - not to find perfect alignment but to find common ground.

"It's only history because it happened to someone before us. That doesn't mean it's not going to happen again." Important words from former US Attorney General Loretta Lynch at NC's state employee observance program.

Policy-relevant research often lacks accompanying relevant action, such as including policy partners in the research process. May this tip and others to come inspire more of that action and partnership.

"How many of you have shared that plan with a policymaker or practitioner?" No hands raised. Researchers lament that policymakers don't value or use their work. We often don't know that work exists.

If not, tell them! And continue to tell them. Even better, ask for their input. Don't wait until your paper/article is published and then send them a link to the final product (happens frequently). Not helpful and at times worse than not helpful.
