🧵If I could shout from the rooftops about one thing, it would be this: Business planning doesn't have to suck! In fact, it can be CREATIVE and PLAYFUL and FUN! I coach mostly creative freelancers, and so many of them arrive in my Zoom room filled with dread.

Anyone have a financial advisor or planner they love? I want someone to take a look at our whole picture and tell us what we can improve!

Also, this was the lowest rate the broker could find for our family in the state of Oregon. The lowest. At $1k/ month. To cover virtually nothing.

For those of you following my health insurance saga: We used a local broker (recommend!) to find a $1000/ month high deductible ($7k/ person) family plan. Will be paring it with accident insurance and an HSA. Sigh. Not great, but not terrible.

Also I am reading this back and I love how I call paying $12k/ year for a $28k deductible, catastrophic plan “not that bad.” Like I’m just paying $12k for the guarantee that I won’t go into medical debt if something terrible happens??

You don't have to do this alone. (Just FYI.) If you're stuck, ask for help. Ask for support. Ask for guidance. Find more info. Talk to friends. We are not built to do this alone, no matter how much our culture tells us that needing support is weak!!

In coach training, they teach us how to move ppl from victim mode to being angry. That might sound counter-intuitive but it's bc anger is energy! It's momentum! It's a good sign of things to come. Permission to get productive with your rage versus being afraid of it.

During maternity leave I took one project: fact checking ’s incredible book. It changed the way I talk about bodies and food with my kids, and every single person would benefit from reading it. Not surprised this one is a NYT Bestseller!! So well deserved 🙌🏻

Often, we try to handle red light days w/ the expectations of green light days— and then we don’t care for ourselves and lose a week instead of a day. Adjusting according to the day you wake up with is revolutionary. What kind of day are you having today? ❤️

🟢 GREEN LIGHT DAY: the best kind of day! All is well! You can move forward with your day as planned. Glory be. (As a parent and a person w chronic mental health symptoms, I get these days probably 1-2x per week max. Otherwise, I’m adjusting things.)

🟡 YELLOW LIGHT DAY: you have some symptoms, and maybe a child is home with you because they’re sick. You take a short meeting via phone but cut your to do list in half and ask for grace from your clients.

romanticize your life. listen to classical music while cleaning. buy yourself the flowers. watercolor at dawn. dance in the rain. smile at a stranger passing by. bop down grocery store aisles. bake cookies at midnight. eat a sandwich by the ocean. feel the sun on your face.

⚡️⚡️ This very first round of ADAPT was incredible, due in large part to the cohort that showed up with vulnerability and creativity. Can’t wait for more of this work come fall!

Just finished @jenni_gritters coaching course and it was fantastic. Met other wonderful humans who helped me reframe my own goals, rich conversations about words like "ambition" and took concrete steps toward next season. Small steps already resonating.

There are a lot of tweets in my feed about making tons of money and conquering the world, but it is fully okay to make a good living and be content with maintaining that, in case you need that reminder...(I know I do!)

I'm considering offering a 1-hour workshop for $5 on how to survive a layoff and put steps in place (slowly) to build your own business. Into this? No?

Building a business has felt WAY safer for me than a full-time job. I worked at 2 companies that did layoffs over and over, then I got laid off myself. The trauma of that is unreal. In my business, I trust that I can pivot as the industry changes. I make the decisions.

Not sure what product or service to offer? Answer this question: "What is the most expensive, and specific, problem I can solve?" Here's why it's powerful: • Expensive = It's important/people will pay • Specific = Narrows focus • You = Positioning Give it a try.

Never forget the man I interviewed for a story, right before having my son, who told me: “oh you’ll never be back at work after having kids. I’ll plan to not hear from you about this story.” Sir, I’m still here. Still freaking here, two kids and a hell of a lot of life later.

My whole feed these days seems to be full of layoffs and job announcements. This industry is absolutely unhinged. If you want to build your own boat versus enduring the whiplash of getting (and most likely losing, ugh) another FT job, follow along. That’s my jam.
