Love this! Thank you for tackling this important topic and sharing your advice!
Anybody working on changing this?
I remarked to a friend i wanted to change things from the inside. I was met with skepticism.
It's similar to the med student horror stories I've heard, and we know the system needs fixing.
#amirite?
Any ideas on how to go about it?
For me the toughest part was being one of the older grad students. I had children at home and a (then) husband who worked out of town. Couldn't afford to fall apart. A psychologist at the university was helpful; no shame in seeking therapy.
I am sympathetic. I was 10 yrs older than most PhD students & single mom. My problems were foreign to the people around me. My lab mates were supportive although they didn't really grasp my problems. I wish I could have seek therapy at that time.
During 5 years of a phd thesis in quite adverse conditions I thought about quitting almost hundreds of time, and if I ended up going on and finishing it has been thanks to my fellows phd students who always supported me in these moments! But this means sharing your doubts!
Great that you brought this up. These feelings are real but the loneliness is the biggest one. If one is able to share these struggles with others in a comfortable environment, a huge burden will be lifted.
We agree!
@jenheemstra any idea why is failure almost never discussed on any platform in academia ?
