I guess I care most about being trusted, at least, that’s where I spend most of my effort. Respect is a very good goal, but I don’t think it’s so simple to earn from most people. I gave up on applause long ago.

Very well said. We have to reflect on the “why” we do what we do. I often remind myself that even if someone does not like me, they usually respect me for standing up for what I believe in. For me being liked is not as important as being respected.
