Maybe even ask 'How are you doing' first!? Might explain a lot about how the research is going or not going....

My postdoc mentor
@mpourmpakis_lab always asked, "How are you doing?" not, how is your research going? Thanks, Yanni! -
You are welcome Mudit. We should all first feel happy and part of a group that cares about us before we start working on any big problem..

The same applies to healthcare interactions. Asking “How are you doing?” may seem less significant when compared to treating the patient directly, However is this type of “supportive care” that can often have the most powerful and lasting impact on the patients we serve.

Considering the sensitivity of the endeavor, I'm surprised #PhD Advisors haven't been trained to deal with the psychological landscape of students or postdocs. This explains why candidates abandon their formal research.#Education#Academia#GraduateSchool#Doctoratepic.twitter.com/4bfaIGLo2o

As a leader of the International Students Association, I have raised during a welcome orientation, that some sudents experience depression. Our Prof. supervisor laughed at the idea and with a blank expression questioned “why would you be depressed?”. Acceptance of reality is key.

Great advice. Let’s also extend that to our fellow faculty. Ask them how they are doing - how they are *really* doing. Create space and connection (however small or brief) on a regular basis. This is how we change the micro cultures in which we work. Role modelling compassion

My supervisor did this just the other day and it was so refreshing! It's all too easy to forget that there are humans with limits behind the science. Check in on your humans!

I typically ask "How are you doing?" first. And that's also what my students and postdocs typically ask me first as well. Corollary: sometimes the most important thing that we can do in a research meeting is discuss the latest Marvel movie we saw, video game we're playing, etc.
