“Everything in my career has led up to this. All of that hard work in undergrad, grad school, my postdoc…that has prepared me to do this job.” This is what I was thinking as I started my faculty job. I was so wrong.(1/n)

I have been fortunate to have great mentors throughout my training, and as a result, feel that I had the benefit of more preparation than many have access to. I'm also fortunate that those (and many other) mentors have helped me and continue to coach me along the way.(4/n)

This thread speaks to what I mean when I say we should run our life like a company/business (polarizing Yup). There’s more to our work than the “main skill” we train for. We need to teach our students better, perhaps within training?!

You learn as time goes on to better deal with the "failures". I prefer to think of them as learning opportunities and while they can be difficult to accept at the time I have used them as lessons of how to improve grant proposals for example.

Yep, I started seeing this when looking for a postdoc job. I wondered why the road became so bumpy until I realized that the system I was used to was always some lesson plan, but now I had to really navigate the world. And it seems like a professorship is that x10.
