As an advisor, giving feedback can be uncomfortable. But, it’s far better than leaving students to wonder how they are doing. And, receiving feedback is great opportunity for faculty to grow, too! Not sure how to start? Check out my latest in :

Great leaders don’t have all of the answers. Great leaders are great learners. They recognize what they know and don’t know and then ask questions and seek out advice to fill that gap.

So true, . And all 3 are often frighteningly underresourced. Instead of only comparing research $ and enrollment, we should publicly report good mental health days and burnout index among students at institutions. Students deserve better!

“I’m not trying to be the best female coach, I’m trying to be the best coach.” -Katie Sowers Amen. It’s time to end the qualifiers and recognize that women have the ability to be the best no matter who they are being compared to.

When it comes to improving graduate education, we often talk about mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and mental health as three separate needs. In reality, they are inextricably linked. That may mean real change is more difficult, but it also means change is more impactful.

The people we admire the most are not those who never fail. The people we admire the most are those who have the courage to try things that might not work and the resilience to keep going when things don’t go as planned.

I don’t exercise so that I can be a specific size or look a certain way. I exercise because it relaxes and energizes me, it keeps me healthy, and it makes me feel strong. I exercise for me, not for what other people think of me.

When you're trying to support someone in a challenging situation, never underestimate the power of the words: "I can totally understand why you feel that way" For bonus points (and if you mean it), you can add: "...and I would probably feel the same way, too."

‘... nobody should have to work for multiple years without knowing whether they are on the right path.’ hit the nail on the head once again. No feedback also makes it too easy to develop unrealistic expectations of yourself i.e ~ more anxiety ~

I wonder why academia has been so hesitant to have systems for feedback in labs? It’s essential for growth of faculty members and trainees. Maybe it has to do with the emotional scars from “feedback”... Check out ’s awesome advice about feedback in labs! 👇

Although everyone has different experiences, I did not come into this world feeling like I didn't belong. I was born feeling like me (whatever that was). It was the moment that someone told me that "women should..." and "black women are..." that I realized I was a minority.

As much as I like getting positive feedback, it's the negative feedback that helps me grow the most. 😐 So I can totally relate to the things talks about in her latest Office Hours column for :
