It might interest you to know that the time it takes to learn how to be an effective farmworker is about 3 years. How do we know? Because it was built into slave plantations' financial records. That's how we bloody well know.

This is a really underappreciated point that is getting more important all the time: regulation is needed when a reasonably educated person, even with some dedicated time, cannot reasonably understand the full extent of how they are being exploited.

An exceptional discussion from start to finish. One of the most interesting parts is when & discuss what counts as a privacy harm. argues the pervasive surveillance of location in itself is a harmful act, regardless of how the data gets used.

HCI Profs: The exercise I give in my Fundamentals of HCI class that creates the most shock and insight is this simple one. It elicits intense, thoughtful, and sometimes paradigm-shifting responses from students in their write-ups.

I think "biggest flaw" in this headline is a bad take. This is why self-driving cars are going to take over. They are SO MUCH SAFER. Cops pull in front, slow down, & the car stops. Without autopilot, it would have crashed and people easily could be dead.

Protip: It's pretty inevitable that your personal data will get compromised in various database breaches every year or so. Simply change your surname to a new random value each time and you'll be safe.
