LOL, today I was called an Uncle Tom and an unhinged radical by two different people for saying the exact same thing.

I'm afraid you've been the talk of Facebook too (well, a couple of Facebook groups anyway) Your Tweets yesterday definitely caused a stir. For what it's worth, I agree with everything you tweeted and I said as much.

It’s pretty clear most of the conversation is happen elsewhere and then people are getting directed to my Twitter feed, so I thought as much.

I appreciate your support ❤️ I worry that these conversations encourage group think and a sort of dynamic of agreement through social reinforcement that prevents/precludes people from *reading what I actually write* and drawing their own conclusions.

People tend to forget you are just a "normal" person battling chronic illness like the rest of us. But with your help the ME community has achieved more in the last couple of years than we had in the previous 100 years. So thank you!

I’m a very normal person! I haven’t changed at all. I’ve just been doing what I’ve been doing every day since I was born and then now suddenly I have a personal police force. It’s strange. Really strange.

What I will say is I understand that yes, with having reach and a platform comes responsibility. But I do take that responsibility seriously and everything I do is in an effort to improve or save lives.

I think where I differ from the critiques they think it’s my job to reflect views in concordance with theirs and if I don’t that their job is to attack me.

My platform is mine because I built it using my voice and expressing my ideas. If people no longer like the ideas that I express they can deplatform me. They can unfollow me. They stop sharing those ideas.

But how can you ask me to stop using the voice that brought people around the campfire in the first place? What good am I if I stop being myself? What good is any of us if we stop being ourselves and offering to the world whatever it is that we have to give?

Jen, if I may make a suggestion, in an attempt to clarify the confusion I am seeing. Could you add something like this to your Twitter bio? “Tweets are my own”, “tweets do not necessarily represent MEAction” Thanks!

Yeah sure! When I’ve said that I’ve been accused of being “disingenuous” and when I point to the actual work and programs of MEAction over and over again, no one cares. But I will do. I think the truth is that until we hire an ED, my voice is not my own. It’s really not.

And yet nothing I’ve said in the past few days – speaking out against the psychologization of our illness, medical abuse, or for collaboration across disease – is new. I’ve been speaking about all of these things for years.
