  2. After returning from my first visit to Boston in a quarter of a century I wondered if I could work out where this photo of me and my Dad was taken. Using google maps I found it, even though the greenhouse has since been demolished! (Subsequently confirmed by my mum who took it)

Photo from 1993 of baby Jemima in a pushchair with her dad in Boston, USA
Screenshot from google maps of the same area of Boston (from 2010)

When I started my PhD I read loads of papers from the Quarterly Journal of the and one of my secret goals was to publish a paper there. Having one in collaboration with and my supervisors at is even more special! 6/6

One exciting aspect was working with real data in an operational system. I learned: how to use netCDF file formats, about instruments/weather forecasting, and how unwieldy huge integrated code systems can be! Thankfully I had lots of help and advice from Met Office colleagues 5/n

Most of the numerical experiments were performed back in 2016 when I spent 6 weeks . But there was a lot of data (around 600000 obs locations) so it took a while to investigate and understand how to present our conclusions. 4/n

Things we were interested in: do we see an increase in speed (yes)? How do our solutions change (mostly not much, but some variables by a unrealistic amount)? Do the changes in a nonlinear (complicated) system behave in the way predicted by linear (simpler) theory (yes!)? 3/n

In a previous paper, we looked at 'reconditioning' methods that can be used to help us solve our problem faster. Weather centres already use these methods and we wanted to do a detailed study about how they work for a real and complicated system. 2/n

It's (almost) the end of my work day, so time for a short non-technical summary of our new paper! My PhD research used maths to improve weather forecasts. Including more information about observation uncertainties is important but can be computationally expensive 1/n

For those of you who need something cheery on a sad day for the UK, here's a picture of my pet rabbit Nutmeg. She had surgery today and now has to wear a babygro for medical reasons, so both an exceedingly brave and adorable bunny

Moving abroad, a farce by me: Can't get online banking until you have a US phone number Can't get a US phone number until you have a US bank account Can't activate your card online without a phone number Wait 2 more days for PIN to arrive Order SIM Wait 2 days

I've revived my blog from my Erasmus year in France to document my adventures in the US over the next four months. Read my first post for photos of Providence in the snow and hot takes about light switches and opening doors.

Life as a new : coming up with flexible enough talk titles that in 5 months time you could be presenting i) work so new it hasn't been started ii) content from your PhD which isn't quite as relevant to the minisymposia iii) most likely some hybrid.

My family refer to things of this ilk as "inappropriate bookmarks" - usually we mean important letters/documents (the most frequent offender), receipts, tickets, coasters, glasses cases etc not cheese!

One of my favourite things to do when I'm travelling is to wander round and admire the local architecture. Providence is very different from anywhere else I've visited, and looked particularly impressive in the snow earlier today.

Also I know books in the UK are cheap but these prices surprised me - RRP for the same books (3 hardback, 1 paperback) in the UK is £70.87. My bank account gives thanks for libraries all over the world!

Today I joined the public library in Providence because my unsatiable hunger for books must be fed. This is a neat feature on my receipt and I am intrigued/smug to think about how much money I've saved from borrowing rather than buying books in my lifetime!

Not a bad view from my new desk at ! I'm here for the next 4 months for a semester programme on Model and Dimension Reduction and I'm very excited (if faintly terrified)

I had been to France once before moving there - Erasmus and the associated funding made it possible for me to go. Without it I would not have studied abroad. All of the votes yesterday make me very sad, but I can personally attest to how important the programme was for me.

I'm moving to the US for 4 months next week for work and 1) I wouldn't have applied for a short term post without previous experience living abroad 2) the difference in logistics and expense (before I've even left) of going to an EU vs non-EU country has been stark.

Spending a year studying in France was life changing: it completely changed my approach to studying, was great mental preparation for doing a PhD, drastically improved my language skills, I traveled abroad for the first time as an adult and experienced life in a new culture.
