I don't think enough people realise one of the most fundamental questions about statehood was if state X would be a 'slave' or 'free' state.
The Civil War started because of the expansion of slavery not the failure to compromise. They’d literally been compromising on slavery since the Declaration of Independence.

I live in Missouri & am old enough to have gotten a real education. I could've written 35 cogent pages by 6th grade about the MO Compromise.
