@williamjbroad Great article on anglerfish in the Times. But it is not true that they first came to the attention of science in 1833.
Lophius piscatorius was classified by Linnaeus in 1758. But the fish was also extensively described by Aristotle, for example in On the Generation of Animals 3, 3 (754a).

Aristotle places it among the selachians, alongside sharks and skates, but also uses a common Greek term that translates as 'fishing frog', which highlights the lure-like appendage on its forehead.
