Lophius piscatorius was classified by Linnaeus in 1758. But the fish was also extensively described by Aristotle, for example in On the Generation of Animals 3, 3 (754a).
@williamjbroad Great article on anglerfish in the Times. But it is not true that they first came to the attention of science in 1833.
