I was at the demonstrations in Bucharest on Fri and Sat evenings, and can confirm that the violence was initiated by the gendarmes, who were mostly unprovoked. I was standing with my friend Vlad Alexandrescu, a senator from an anti-corruption party in an area w foreign reporters.
There were many comparisons to the use of miners to break up demonstrations in 1990, though this time the paid instigators were widely thought to be football supporters who had just come from a match.
