Clean-up in the Town Hall Aisle: A day after saying she welcomed a “conversation” about inmates voting in jail, @KamalaHarris said today: “Do I think that people who commit murder, people who are terrorists should be deprived of their rights? Yeah, I do. I’m a prosecutor.”

The over representation of minorities means a block on prisoner voting is a further smothering of their voices in American politics. This needs to be part of the discussion.

Why should people who’ve murdered other people have the right to vote? These are people so vile they have to be removed from society. They don’t need to vote.

Murderers take away the right to vote (amongst other rights) of their victims. So I wouldn’t lose any sleep of a murderer not being able to cast a ballot.

I was a federal prosecutor. I never saw depriving a defendant of the right to vote as a means of vindicating a victim’s rights or keeping the public safe.

We have some dumb prosecutors then. They deprived themselves of the right to vote by violating the public’s trust by committing crime. Prison is about punishment too.

It's not about who "deserves" what. It's about constructing a better society. Prosecutors defend capitalism, white supremacy, state terror, patriarchy, and a host of other harmful power structures. They don't fit into a better society which lacks those things.

Name a society that has not had crime or some form of punishment for said crimes. Does a better society include fewer consequences for murderers & child molesters? For rapists? They already face about as little retribution as possible, is that “better”?
