Yeah, moving to subscription model is a deal breaker for me. But - let's not kid ourselves about the alternatives. Any software product can (and many will) become subscription based. Other devs might handle it better, but still... expect more of this.

Rick Rubin's The Creative Act is such a beautiful and much-needed reminder for me. I bought the Audiobook for walks, Kindle edition for devices, and the Hardcover for quick tactile reference in the studio. I highly recommend it for every artist.
