As an undergrad in philosophy, I was mostly uninspired by my philosophy classes—found them sterile—but was enraptured by my philosophy-heavy psychology classes. I later realized it was because my phil profs were analytic philosophers & my psych profs were pragmatists.

  2. All this to stay, I understand the real concern that this might be stifling for future cultural innovations. Still, having a more consistent aesthetic in a given locale—preferably when derived in a more bottom-up fashion—contributes a lot to the quality of life for inhabitants.

  4. I'm largely a pacifist but I'm totally ready to make war on modernist architecture. Ah, let's include modernist art while we're at it. (Note: I'm no fan of executive orders, for obvious reasons, so I'd love for there to be another way.)

  5. I'm skeptical of how much meaningful advancement of human flourishing can or will result from federal level policies. However, here are 3 overly-simplified positions that might help foster it. -Bring the troops home -Reorient toward self-directed learning -End the war on drugs

For a few years, I was a good schoolteacher. Only in retrospect do I see the ways in which contorting myself into an entertaining authoritarian turned me into an unforgiving person away from the job. You could never turn the drill sergeant switch off.

For James, temperament was the result of a mixture of personality, psych, experience, culture, etc—the crucial aspect being it's influence on the sorts of problems we find most pressing/the sorts of answers which seem most "live" to US in solving them. We're never neutral judges

BREAKING NEWS: "In a nationwide survey of 21,678 U.S. high school students, researchers from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence & the Yale Child Study Center found" that high school students are.... [wait for it] "tired," "stressed" and "bored."

More professors ought to be aware of this (it seems). For professors advising their students who are interested in grad school, do you find that you make an concerted effort to ensure that your students don't get blindsided when ending up in an analytic phil department?

I started studying philosophy as a form of therapy; imagine my shock when I ended up in a analytical philosophy department.

We deceive ourselves if we think the reality that we hold certain ideas as true has little to do with how much those views resonate with our temperaments. If certain ideas don't agree with our temperaments, we tend to find post hoc reasons to "prove" their falsehood.

Please, somebody, give me signs to be encouraged by. What are some towns/cities in the US that are building places that people will actually find uplifting and beautiful two centuries from now? Please share examples from your communities.

Sehnsucht. Oh, and yes, nearly every time. But in a "I'm satisfied with life and super content with having this sort of longing with me" way.
